Walk-Through Metal Detectors in 2026: Three Engines Driving Demand
Walk-through metal detectors remain the largest single equipment category in security screening, accounting for 34.25% of equipment revenue in 2025, according to Mordor Intelligence. The wider screening market is projected to grow from USD 9.31 billion in 2025 to USD 9.94 billion in 2026, reaching USD 13.77 billion by 2031 — a 6.74% CAGR.
Three engines are now driving the category beyond its traditional airport base.
- Mega events. The 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico is upgrading screening at host airports and stadiums, which operate airport-style security including metal detectors. Expo 2030 in Riyadh expects more than 40 million visitors, and Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup plans 15 stadiums.
- Everyday public spaces. In the United States, 2026 has brought a wave of state legislation on school weapons detection, with grants of up to USD 500,000 per project — while fewer than 10% of public schools are currently equipped. Government buildings, mosques, malls and event venues are expanding screening in the same way.
- Infrastructure and regulation. North America took 36.05% of 2025 screening revenue, while Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region at an 8.14% CAGR through 2031. India published about 54 metal detector tenders in 2026; Poland's new central airport is procuring walk-through and handheld detectors; Gulf tender platforms list 67+ metal detector tenders; and donor-funded programmes in Nigeria and Egypt are adding screening equipment.
Buyers are increasingly specifying multi-zone detection, lower false alarms, networked units integrated with access control, and mobile screening — the portable segment is growing at an 8.32% CAGR. Service contracts now represent nearly 30% of total contract value.
